I want to talk about one of my favorite “supplements”. I am always asked what methylene blue does or how I feel when I take it. It’s hard to explain. I take it prophylactically when I feel like i’m coming down with something. If i’m overly tired, if i’m exposed to too much things that interfere with mitochondria function such as poor sleep, artificial light, toxins, pollution, poor food choices, and so much more.

Methylene blue supports cellular energy production by enhancing mitochondrial function, which is where the body’s energy (ATP) is primarily generated. I believe if your cells are not properly functioning you will be more prone to getting sick and diseases. I find MB pretty magical, but remember I live a pretty healthy lifestyle. I am not perfect and there are certain things like toxins and bacteria/viruses I cant avoid, so I use it as needed!

Here’s how it works:

1. Acts as an Electron Carrier in the Electron Transport Chain (ETC)

• The ETC is the final step of cellular respiration, where mitochondria produce ATP by transferring electrons through a series of complexes.

• Methylene blue can accept and donate electrons, bypassing dysfunctional components of the ETC.

• In cases of mitochondrial dysfunction (e.g., due to aging or oxidative stress), it facilitates electron flow from NADH to oxygen, ensuring ATP production continues efficiently.

• This is particularly helpful if complex I or III of the ETC is impaired.

2. Reduces Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)

• Methylene blue acts as an antioxidant, neutralizing excess ROS produced in dysfunctional mitochondria.

• ROS can damage mitochondrial membranes, proteins, and DNA, impairing energy production.

• By reducing ROS, methylene blue preserves mitochondrial integrity and efficiency.

3. Supports NAD+ Recycling

• Methylene blue promotes the regeneration of NAD+, a crucial coenzyme required for glycolysis and the TCA cycle (the steps leading up to the ETC).

• NAD+ helps convert nutrients into usable energy and plays a vital role in maintaining cellular metabolism.

• By enhancing NAD+ availability, methylene blue supports energy production upstream of the ETC.

4. Enhances Oxygen Utilization

• Methylene blue helps mitochondria use oxygen more efficiently.

• It supports conditions where oxygen delivery is reduced (e.g., hypoxia or poor circulation), ensuring ATP synthesis remains active.

5. Reduces Metabolic Stress

• By bypassing damaged ETC components and reducing ROS, methylene blue lowers the metabolic burden on cells.

• This allows cells to operate with greater efficiency and focus energy on repair and maintenance.

Energy Impact

By improving electron transport, reducing oxidative stress, and supporting NAD+ recycling, methylene blue ensures more efficient ATP production, directly enhancing cellular energy levels. This has profound effects on energy-demanding tissues such as the brain, heart, and muscles.

How I take it:

Methylene blue comes in a tincture. I microdose it by doing one drop on my tongue. Be careful, it stains and it taste bitter. I try to hold it in my mouth for about 30 seconds before drinking water.

Other things I like for mitochondrial support:

Red light therapy! Red light can increase the rate of energy our mitochondria produce & the amount of oxygen our cells consume. My favorite device is this one.

Exercise, sunlight, a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, & good quality sleep!

The use of methylene blue should be discussed with a qualified healthcare provider, as its safety and efficacy depend on individual health conditions, dosages, and potential interactions with medications.
